Our programs are trying something new, and while the journey started several months ago (maybe even longer) we are continuing to slowly explore the valuable use of loose parts.
Loose parts is more of a shift to collections of items (many natural, or naturally found) being the primary source of ‘toys’ or equipment in a program room. The main notion is that such opportunity to allows children to really explore and use their imagination to play. It leaves the experience more open ended, giving a variety of uses for a single item.
Tubes turn into telescopes, towers, noise makers and more. Blocks can be buildings, roads, forests etc. Play can continue with these objects long after a child’s interest changes by adding extra pieces to the play.
Staff are seeking out training, reading and resources to support this move in thought and the children are benefiting as we try out our wares and ideas. Stay tuned…
